As North Macedonia transitions to a more sustainable energy future, the role of solar energy has become increasingly significant. With its abundant sunlight and favorable climate, the country is well-positioned to harness solar energy through photovoltaics (PV). Current State of Solar Energy in North Macedonia


By the end of 2022, the country had reached a photovoltaic capacity of approximately 144 MW, with projections indicating rapid growth in the coming years. In 2023 alone, North Macedonia saw an impressive increase in solar capacity, with new installations contributing to a total increase of 251% compared to the previous year. This growth reflects the country's commitment to renewable energy, as outlined in its National Energy and Climate Plan (NECP), which aims for a 38% share of renewables in gross final energy consumption by 2030.


The geographic advantages of North Macedonia, including an average of 280 sunny days per year and daily solar radiation levels ranging from 3.4 KWh/m² in the north to 4.2 KWh/m² in the southwest, make it an ideal location for solar power generation. 


The Potential for Photovoltaics 


The potential for solar energy development in North Macedonia is vast. With estimates suggesting that the country could harness up to 11 GW of solar PV capacity, there is significant room for growth. Utilizing rooftops and degraded lands for solar installations can further enhance this potential, allowing for efficient land use while minimizing environmental impact.


Enhancing Energy Independence With Photovoltaic Power Plants


One of the most compelling benefits of expanding solar energy capacity in North Macedonia is its potential to enhance energy independence. In 2021, approximately 33.2% of North Macedonia's electricity consumption was covered by imports. By 2022, this figure decreased significantly to 20.77%, reflecting a positive trend towards reducing reliance on external sources. 


This shift can be largely attributed to increased investments in photovoltaic projects, which have bolstered local electricity production.Currently, North Macedonia imports electricity primarily from neighboring countries such as Bulgaria, Serbia, Hungary, and Greece. In 2023, approximately 9.8 million MWh of electricity was imported at a cost of around $231 million, with Bulgaria being the largest supplier.


Economic and Environmental Benefits From Solar Energy 


The economic benefits of solar energy are substantial. By reducing reliance on fossil fuels, solar power can help lower greenhouse gas emissions and improve air quality. This transition is essential for combating climate change and promoting public health.


Economically, the growth of the solar sector can create jobs and stimulate local economies. As new solar projects are developed, opportunities for employment in installation, maintenance, and manufacturing will increase, contributing to economic resilience.


Integrating solar energy can lead to significant cost savings for households and businesses. With decreasing costs associated with solar panels and installation, the return on investment (ROI) for solar systems continues to improve.

The future of solar energy in North Macedonia looks promising, but addressing challenges will be crucial for realizing its full potential. Policymakers should focus on streamlining regulatory processes, investing in grid upgrades, and promoting public awareness about solar benefits.
